Enrique López-Tamayo Biosca, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>,via Wikimedia Commons On October 4 each year, Catholics worldwide celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi.  The feast commemorates the life of St Francis. He was born in the 12th century and is the patron saint of animals. St Francis was the founder of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church (1181 or 1182 – 1226). He is remembered for his generosity to the poor and his willingness to minister to the lepers. He also loved animals and nature. St Francis died in Portiuncula, on October 4, 1226.   Pope Gregory IX pronounced St Francis a saint in 1228. The pope also laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. Many people bring their pets to the church to be blessed on St Francis’ feast day because of his love for animals. Here is a great story of St Francis confronting a vicious wolf and how he tamed him.
