The Feast of the Divine Mercy Sunday

The Feast of the Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday Feast is observed on the First Sunday after Easter Sunday, April 11, 2021 - so mark your calendar!

Praise God for this divine grace He gave us - a rare opportunity to obtain not only the forgiveness of (confessed) our sins, but also the punishment we deserved for our sins - that is spending time in ‘purgatory’, if temporal punishment (penance) is not achieved in our lifetime. Our soul will be spotless as if we were baptized.

In her Diary, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska recorded 14 revelations from our Lord requesting this feast. The most complete, concise description is found in entry 699:

I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners . … The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.

To receive the extraordinary graces of this feast, the condition is:

  • by making a good Confession beforehand and staying in the state of grace, and receive with great trust in Divine Mercy.
  • to receive Holy Communion worthily on Divine Mercy Sunday (or the vigil celebration)
  • we also are encouraged to venerate* the Divine Mercy Image and perform acts of mercy through deed, word, or prayer.

*To “venerate” a sacred image simply means to perform some act, or make some gesture of deep religious respect toward it because of the person whom it represents.

I want the Image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it

(Diary of St. Faustina, 341)
